Essential Tools for Budding Blacksmiths
Blacksmithing is a growing industry, with many taking it on as a new passion! Having the right skills is key and honing the tricks of the trade can help those new to the industry flourish, but having the right tools is equally important.
As a leading equipment and tools supplier to blacksmiths and farriers across Canada, we at Professional Farrier Supply are happy to share what our years of experience and knowledge have taught us are the essential tools for budding blacksmiths.
Here’s the list of basic tools that every beginner blacksmith needs to safely venture into the trade.
Forge
A forge is the primary heat source or furnace used to soften/melt the metal used for blacksmithing. However, one of the first decisions you will have to consider is what type of fuel to use for your forge. There are two main type - gas or coal forges.
Gas forges can be fueled by natural gas or propane. Propane forges are widely used between blacksmiths and farriers, as it provides instant and consistent heat, while also being somewhat portable. Coal forges are an alternative option but do require a blower and coal supply. Although coal forges offer more flexibility and precision, they do require some finesse to monitor for consistent heat during the smithing process.
At Professional Farrier Supply, we are proud to provide trusted brands such as NC Tool, Forgemaster, Fletcher Forge and more. Browse our selection of top-quality forges and equipment today.
Anvil
Made of either forged or cast steel, an anvil is the base that provides resistance to the blacksmith when hitting against the metal they are hammering. By providing the same amount of rebound power that the blacksmith’s hammering gives, it makes forming metal a much easier job, making an anvil an essential tool in every blacksmith’s workshop.
Anvils also have round and square parts, allowing the blacksmith to mould their metal, in addition to two holes: one, the pritchel, is used for stabilization and to punch through metal, and the other, the hardy, is used for holding tools.
Professional Farrier Supply offers a selection of anvil brands in various sizes both used and new for every blacksmith’s budget.
Hammer
A hammer is the essential tool of choice for any and every blacksmith, and for good reason. A hammer is an extension of the blacksmith’s skilled hand and is the tool that is necessary to shape and mould their material.
There are many different kinds of hammers, with some better suited for more specialized tasks than others. The type of hammer you choose will be based on various factors, including individual needs and level of skill as well as what the hammer will be used for, such as blacksmithing, farriering, etc.
At Professional Farrier Supply, we provide a wide selection of quality hammers to suit multiple skill levels and tasks.
Tongs
Trying to handle a scalding piece of hot metal with your hands would be nothing short of a nightmare, which is why having a set of tongs is a must for every blacksmith. Tongs are even available in different shapes and sizes depending on the material and aspect ratio to further assist the blacksmith in moving and grasping their workpiece. This helps keep a good grip and often improves the quality of work.
